Too many factors can adversely affect a wine during the aging process—wine's highly important formative years. Extreme care is taken to keep the caves at Vineyard 29 in optimal condition, both in terms of temperature regulation, and overall cleanliness. This allows us to ensure that these early years are of pure benefit to the wine without the risk of exposure to any elements which might be harmful to the wines' aroma and flavor.
The cave configuration consists of three distinct tunnels. The north and south tunnels converge at the Vineyard 29 Events Room, a point reaching 125 feet back into the Mayacamas mountains. Another 25 feet further into the mountainside lies the Wine Library, 75 feet behind the Vineyard 29 facility. This particular tunnel configuration, a giant arch with one main artery, allows individual portions of the tunnel system to be designated for individual use. Thus, each tunnel section serves as its own distinct cave space, allowing us the flexibility to treat our wines as we wish in carefully aging each barrel.
