Born in Australia, Gerry holds a degree in viticulture and enology from Roseworthy College, South Australia with further studies at University of California, Davis. He began his career with B Seppelts and Sons, Barossa Valley, where he contributed his expertise for six years. His introduction to Napa Valley winemaking came in the great year of 1987 at Stags Leap Winery. Later, Gerry learned to make mountainside wines with finesse as assistant winemaker of Chappellet Winery. After hours, he established Rowland Cellars and began making wine under the Ramspeck label. In 1997, Gerry launched his full time career as owner and winemaker of Rowland Cellars and consultant to boutique wineries. Rowland Cellars now produces wines under the labels Rowland, Ramspeck and Cenay.
Biography in brief

Gerry’s pursuit of quality in all aspects of winemaking led to an unexpected endeavor: inventions. Not always finding equipment to meet his high standards, Gerry designed and refined tools for winemaking. Since California winemakers have been quick to recognize the benefits of such equipment, the tools can be found in most West Coast wineries.

Winemaking and grape growing are in Gerry Rowland’s blood. In 1537, his German ancestors first put the family crest on a wine label and brokered it throughout Europe. Gerry himself was raised in Australia’s famed wine region, the Barossa Valley, where his father farmed grapes.
